Scott Sears becomes youngest person to reach South Pole solo

12th January 2018

Antarctic complete

Scott Sears has become the youngest person to reach the South Pole completely unassisted and unsupported.

When verified, the 27-year-old will have beaten the world record by two years.

Scott, a Lieutenant with the First Battalion Royal Gurkha Rifles, completed the 702-mile trek to the underside of the globe in 38 days, which was ahead of the original planned estimate of 40 to 50 days. A truly remarkable and magnificent effort which Scott carried out to raise funds on behalf of the Gurkha Welfare Trust.

His just giving page:

A1 Pharmaceuticals Plc is one of Scott’s major sponsors, donating £5,000 to Scott’s cause in addition to providing some equipment that Scott used on the expedition.

Before embarking on the expedition, Scott visited the A1 Pharmaceuticals Plc offices and met with Managing Director and founder Gary Lewis to both acknowledge the sponsorship donation and also present Gary Lewis with a ceremonial Gurkha Kukri.

In a blog post on Boxing Day, Scott posted a picture of himself at the pole and said: “Merry Christmas from the South Pole. Absolutely chuffed to pieces.”

Referring to the sledge which held his tent and rations as “Bessie”, he added: “After 38 days, Bessie and I have made it the pole and officially broken the world record as the youngest person ever to have reached the South Pole solo, unsupported and unassisted.”

The adventurer is the brother of Kim Sears, the wife of Scottish tennis ace Andy Murray which appears to have impacted some of the well deserved coverage of this record breaking achievement.

“Murray’s brother-in-law treks solo to the North Pole,” said the BBC.

“Andy Murray’s brother-in-law ‘becomes youngest ever to reach South Pole solo,” said the Daily Mirror.

“Andy Murray’s brother-in-law conquers South Pole ALONE,” tweeted the Mail Online.

There were also congratulations to Scott from the Murray family.

Judy Murray tweeted: “well done Scott Sears (brother of Andy’s wife Kim) youngest person to reach the South Pole on a solo mission. Got there on Christmas Day……”

Judy Murray’s congratulations are echoed by Gary Lewis and the entire staff of A1 Pharmaceuticals Plc on a magnificent achievement.
