Willis Run Ends In Quarter Final
After two comfortable wins at the British Tour Masters event in Nottingham, sixth seeded Marcus Willis’ run was unfortunately ended in the quarter finals. Although only currently ranked at 951 in the world, Marcus was recently the beneficiary of a sponsorship agreement with A1 Pharmaceuticals managing director Gary Lewis. Marcus recently travelled to Thailand to compete in three futures tournaments, made possible by Gary’s funding, and his tennis this week has shown the benefit of his Asian trip.
The highlight of Marcus’ trip was a quarter final appearance at the Chang Futures event in Phuket, where Marcus lost out to eventual winner and top seed Alexander Ward in two close sets. Marcus has carried his good form into this week’s British Tour event, and won his opening two rounds comfortably. Although Marcus and Gary both expect Marcus to start climbing the rankings, facing current world number 407 Richard Bloomfield was always going to be difficult. Marcus made a great start, shocking Bloomfield by taking the first set on a tie break. Bloomfield fought back to win a tight second set, and although Marcus battled hard, he was unable to prevent Bloomfield taking the deciding set.
Whilst disappointed with the defeat, Marcus’ play over the past couple of weeks has been encouraging. With Gary taking over full time management of Marcus for 2013, both Marcus and Gary are hopeful of a steady rise up the world rankings next year.« Back to News
