Received in the form of a crystal bowl and a scroll signed by the Queen, this prestigious award was an extremely proud moment for the co-founders of A1, Gary and Carmen Lewis. Awarded by the Queen on the basis of a recommendation from the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Mr. David Cameron MP, the Queen’s Award for Enterprise recognises the outstanding contribution A1 Pharmaceuticals has made to international trade.
Founded in 1986 from humble beginnings, managing director Gary had a vision of creating a multi-million pound pharmaceutical company. Inspired by his father and economics teacher, and being ably assisted by his future wife, Carmen, Gary set about realising his dream from his London base. Gary says he was certain the company would be a success from the first day, when Carmen returned to their flat having a secured £200 profit. The company has grown significantly since that day, doubling in size in the last three years, with projected annual sales of £64M for 2012/3.
The Mayor of Havering, Lynden Thorpe, described her pride at a local company winning such a major award, and Colonel Bryant was equally effusive in his praise, placing in context just how difficult it was gain such recognition, A1 being only the 17th company in Greater London to be recognised in this way, and the first pharmaceutical wholesaler to win the Award. In his acceptance speech, Gary thanked all the employees for their hard work, and recognised that each employee’s contribution had made the award possible. Not only does this award represent a crowning moment in the careers of Gary and Carmen, it also reflects the hard work and dedication of the great team which they have assembled at A1.« Back to News
