Marcus Willis causes shock upset at Glasgow Futures
Fresh from signing a sponsorship agreement with the managing director of A1 Pharmaceuticals PLC and founder of the A1 Tennis Academy in Orpington, Gary Lewis, Marcus recorded arguably the biggest win of his fledgling career in Glasgow. Currently ranked at 964 in the ATP world rankings, Marcus is being sponsored and personally managed by Gary. Marcus has been training at the A1 academy, which aims to break down the barriers of elitism in British tennis, as well as providing free membership and coaching for disadvantaged young people. After an intensive winter training block, Marcus is in great shape, which he demonstrated by winning his opening two rounds at the Glasgow futures tournament.
His quarter final opponent, Dan Evans, ranked at 297 in the world, represented a tough prospect for Marcus. Evans has also represented Great Britain in the Davis Cup, and, as the second seed, was the heavy favourite. Evans duly sailed through the first set 6-2. Marcus was undeterred, showing all the fighting qualities he had needed to come through a three set match the previous day, taking the second set on a tie break. Once in the decider, Marcus got an early break of serve to lead 3-1. He held his nerve against his more experienced opponent; living up to his nickname ‘Bomber’ by landing several huge serves, and was able to see out the set 6-4. In the end, a 2-6, 7-6, 6-4 victory against a player ranked over 600 places ahead of Marcus in the world rankings represents a significant scalp.
Marcus had great pedigree as a junior, having been the number 15 ranked junior player in the world, and the British number 1 at under 18 level. Although his ranking currently doesn’t reflect his ability, his results this week will see him climb significantly up the world rankings, into the high 800s. With Gary’s management and A1’s continued sponsorship, Gary is confident that Marcus will rise into the top 600 this year, with a top 100 singles ranking the eventual goal.
