Devonshire Park LTC crowned county champions at Sussex LTA’s Annual General Meeting25th January 2013
On the occasion of the Sussex Annual General Meeting, Devonshire Park was presented with the County Division 1 trophy. This is the fourth time that Devonshire Park has won this prestigious trophy since its inauguration in the 1880s, having previously been county champions in 1948, 1964 and 1965. Under the current format of Aegon Team Tennis, the county champions go onto contest a playoff, with the winner competing in the regional tier of Aegon the following year. Devonshire Park was able to cap a successful year by demolishing Bexley of Kent 5-1 in the playoff.

It has been nearly 50 years since Devonshire Park were last crowned county champions, but since the managing director of A1 Pharmaceuticals, Gary Lewis, joined the committee and took over the running of the teams only a few years ago, a period of sustained and unprecedented success swiftly followed. Having taking over a side that was languishing in the lower leagues of the Sussex county division, Gary, ably assisted by 2012 Scottish veteran player of the year, Jason Barnett, Devonshire Park won several successive promotions, and qualified for the top division last year. Under Gary’s management, a strong squad were able to win the first division at the first attempt. Also worthy of note was Jason’s unbeaten run of 25 matches. Not content with simply winning the overall Sussex county title, Devonshire Park went on to thrash Kent giants Bexley 5-1 in the playoff to decide promotion to the regional tier of Aegon.

Gary is confident of further success in the forthcoming season, which sees the team competing on several fronts in 2013. Gary has recruited two ATP world ranked players, Neil Pauffley (462) and Marcus Willis (964, but set to climb significantly following his first ITF futures success), to spearhead the campaign for promotion to the national tier. There is also a further Aegon team, which will be competing in the second division of the county tier, as well as men’s and ladies doubles teams in the local Sussex leagues.« Back to News
