Devonshire Park confirmed as regional champions10th June 2013
On Sunday Devonshire Park’s first team, captained by A1’s founder and managing director Gary Lewis, were confirmed as South East (South) champions of the Aegon team tennis competition after defeating Globe LTC 12-0. In the process, Devonshire Park were promoted to the national tier of Aegon for the first time in its illustrious history, which spans over 100 years. Next year Devonshire Park will be facing such luminaries as multiple winners Bromley LTC and last season’s national champions David Lloyd Raynes Park, and Gary is already planning for a successful assault on the national tier in 2014.

The first team headed into the match quietly confident of securing promotion. Closest rivals Chandos had slipped up the previous weekend, and after Devonshire Park’s 12-0 win over Westside 2, the two sides were level pegging with one match remaining. Devonshire Park had by far the superior ‘rubbers won’ record, so only had to match Chandos’ result in the final match to go up. In the event Chandos won their match, but it was to no avail as a confident performance saw Devonshire Park registering an emphatic victory over Globe, without the loss of even a set.
Gary would like to thank the sponsors, A1 Pharmaceuticals Plc, the committee at Devonshire Park, led by chairman Ken Pollock, as well as the players who turned out throughout the season. Matt Illingworth, Neil Pauffley, Harry Meehan, Marcus Willis, Toby Martin, Rob Chambers, Chris Simpson, Nick Fulwood and Dan Cottier all played their part in an historic season for Devonshire Park.
