Battling Willis shocks 4th seed at Newcastle Futures9th May 2013
A1 sponsored Marcus Willis continued his fine run at the Newcastle Futures, ousting the fourth seeded Australian Jason Kublar at the quarter final stage today. Marcus had made a good start to the week by beating Matthew Short in straight sets, and then overcoming promising Jonny O’Mara in three sets in the second round.
Kublar hadn’t been stretched in either of his earlier matches in the tournament, and looked a good bet to advance to the semi finals after comfortably winning the first set against Marcus. Marcus clawed his way back into the match by taking the second set 6-4. The serve proved to be the key, as Marcus fired down nine aces to Kublar’s solitary ace, whilst only double faulting three times in the three sets played. Kublar was only able to convert 3/17 break points, and he was to live to regret this, as Marcus’ power saw him through the final set 6-2.
Marcus will face second seeded Axel Michon of France in the semi finals. The only previous meeting between the pair provided one of the shocks of the season, as Marcus dumped Michon out of the Shrewsbury Futures in the first round. Marcus has now won 17/26 matches played this season, and his win ratio of 65% greatly exceeds his 50% career win ratio.« Back to News
